The museum of the Orsanti
The Orsanti are not a narrative invention.
Wandering emigration is a phenomenon that really existed in the Parma Apennines and has roots that date far back in time. Begging, itinerant trade, rural and forestry work, spinning, street shows with animals – Orsanti and Scimmmiari – or with musical performances, were some of the activities with which the inhabitants of the Apennine areas tried to face the difficult problem of survival between the 18th and 19th centuries.
Once they reached a sufficiently busy place with lots of people, they set up their own stage for the show. Of all the animals: monkeys, parrots or camels that the Orsanti companies trained for their performances, the star was the bear, which could weigh up to 350 kilos and, when raised on its two hind legs, reach two metres in height.
